Terraria Class Loadout Builder

Best Terraria gear for melee, ranged, magic and summoner at every boss stage, plus a builder that totals your defense and set bonuses.

Pick your class and the next boss you need to beat, and this tool lists the weapons, armour, accessories, ammunition and potions the Official Terraria Wiki recommends for that point in the game, with each item's key stats. Below that, build your own loadout from 43 armour sets and over 100 accessories to see your total defense, how much damage it blocks per hit on your difficulty, and whether your set bonus is active. The data is for Terraria 1.4.5.8.

How to use the loadout builder

  1. Choose Melee, Ranged, Magic or Summoner.
  2. Choose your stage. Stages are named after the next boss you need to beat, from the start of the game to after Moon Lord.
  3. Read the recommendation cards. Items marked Best are the guide's top picks; the rest are good alternatives. Tags show items that only exist in Corruption or Crimson worlds.
  4. Tick Also show general gear for mobility accessories, mounts and potions that help every class.
  5. Click Try this set in the builder on any armour set, or pick a set, head, body and legs yourself.
  6. Set your world difficulty and whether you have used a Demon Heart, then fill your accessory slots.

Where the recommendations come from

Recommendations follow the wiki's Guide:Class setups, which groups gear by class and progression stage. Weapon damage, use time, critical chance and knockback, armour defense and accessory effects come from each item's wiki page. When the guide tells you to keep the armour or accessories from the previous stage (as it does before Moon Lord), the tool shows those cards and labels where they came from. Stats are base values, before prefixes and buffs.

Progression stages

Stage in the tool What it covers
Start of the game Before any boss
Pre-Skeletron After the first bosses
Pre-Wall of Flesh Late pre-Hardmode
Early Hardmode Before the mechanical bosses
Pre-Plantera After the mechanical bosses
Pre-Golem After Plantera
Pre-Lunatic Cultist After Golem
Pre-Moon Lord Lunar events and Moon Lord
Endgame After Moon Lord

How defense works

Defense removes a flat amount from each hit: the hit's damage minus defense × 0.5 in Classic and Journey, × 0.75 in Expert and × 1 in Master, rounded down. The builder shows this number next to your total. For example, 50 defense blocks 25 damage per hit in Classic and 37.5 in Expert.

The total adds each armour piece, the extra defense from the Gold (+3) and Platinum (+4) set bonuses, and accessory defense. It does not include accessory prefixes such as Warding, potions such as Ironskin, or percentage damage reduction from sets like Turtle or Solar Flare.

Set bonuses

A set bonus only works when the head, body and legs all come from the same set. Hardmode ore sets, Hallowed, Chlorophyte, Shroomite and Spectre armour have several headpieces, and the headpiece decides which bonus you get, for example the Hallowed Hood adds two minion slots on top of the dodge. Beetle armour's bonus depends on the body piece. The builder shows the exact bonus text for the pieces you pick.

Accessory slots

You start with 5 accessory slots in Classic and Expert and 6 in Master. A Demon Heart adds one more in Expert and Master, for up to 7. The game does not let you equip the same accessory twice, so the builder clears a duplicate if you pick one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best class in Terraria?

There isn't one. Melee is the most durable, ranged and magic deal strong damage from a distance, and summoners let minions do the work. Many players mix in summon gear because minions add damage on top of any class.

How does defense work in Terraria?

Defense takes a flat amount off each hit: half your defense in Classic and Journey, three quarters in Expert and all of it in Master. For example, 50 defense blocks 25 damage per hit in Classic and 37.5 in Expert. The builder shows this number next to your total.

Why is my set bonus not active?

All three armor pieces must belong to the same set. Mixing, for example, a Platinum Helmet with Gold Chainmail gives the pieces' defense but no bonus.

How much defense do I need for Moon Lord?

The guide doesn't give a target number. Use the Pre-Moon Lord or Pre-Lunatic Cultist recommendations, then compare sets in the builder.

Why do some items show no stats?

A few recommendations are groups rather than single items, such as gem staves, extra jumps or wings. Open the item on the wiki to compare versions.

Does this match the console and mobile versions?

Yes, for current versions. The guide and stats are written for the current desktop, console and mobile version, but older console versions can differ.
